What are serums and how do you use them?

Wat zijn serums en hoe gebruik je die?

What exactly does a serum do?

A serum delivers active ingredients in a formula that absorbs quickly and is designed to make a visible difference to how your skin looks and feels. Think a more even look, more glow, fewer visible blemishes or skin that feels calmer. A serum is an extra step between cleansing and cream, intended to deliver faster visible results for one skin goal.

A cream does a different job. It supports comfort, hydration and the skin barrier, and helps “finish” your routine. Serum first, cream after is usually the logical order.

Where does a serum belong in your routine?

The simple order that is almost always right:

Cleanse —> Serum —> Cream —> SPF in the morning

Serum goes on clean skin. Cream comes after to provide comfort and help lock in moisture. SPF finishes your morning routine and protects against the sun (even when it isn’t out).

How do you use a serum, in practice?

  • Step 1: Cleanse your face and pat dry. Lukewarm water, no scrubbing.
  • Step 2: Apply 2 to 3 drops to your face and neck. Spread, press in gently or massage in briefly. Let it absorb for a moment.
  • Step 3: Finish with your day or night cream. In the morning, end with SPF.

How often do you use a serum?

In fact, consistency matters more than using a lot of product. In the first week, use it every other day; from week 2 you can use a serum daily.

For skin that is easily irritated or dry: apply 3 to 4 times a week and only step it up once your skin stays comfortable.

For example, you can use our WONDR Clarifying Serum in the evening, while preparing your skin for a busy day in the morning with the Firming Serum.

When do you see results?

Serums are not a one-night stand; they stick around for a good while. Many visible changes build up over weeks, not days, so a little patience helps. With active ingredients such as niacinamide and vitamin C, you often see gradual improvement when you use them consistently, usually over a period of several weeks.

WONDR serums, choose your match

WONDR has two serums in the shop, each with one clear job.

Clarifying Serum, 10% Niacinamide

Who is it for?
Normal to oily skin, blemishes, visible pores, shine that quickly returns, skin that often feels “just not in balance”.

What does it do?
In dermatological literature, niacinamide is described as a versatile ingredient that is linked to supporting the skin barrier, a more even look and improved skin balance, including with sebum and blemishes.

How to use it
After cleansing, before your cream. Morning and/or evening. In the morning, always finish with SPF.

Red flag alert!
If your skin starts to sting or feel tight, reduce the frequency and put comfort and cream first for a while.

Firming Serum, 5% Vitamin C Complex

Who is it for?
Dull complexion, a need for glow, skin that wants to look fresher and firmer, antioxidant support in your morning routine.

What it can do
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps brighten the complexion, supports collagen processes and addresses visible signs of photoageing. It is a strong choice alongside daily sun protection, not a replacement for it.

How to use it
Once a day is enough for most routines. It often fits nicely in the morning, after cleansing and before your day cream and SPF.

When this becomes a red flag
If your skin reacts sensitively, use it less often, build up gradually and avoid stacking it with other strongly irritating skincare products on the same morning.

You can combine both, but don’t overdo it: use our WONDR Clarifying Serum in the evening, while preparing your skin for a busy day in the morning with the Firming Serum.

The most common serum mistakes

  1. Using too much product: more drops are rarely better.
  2. Switching or stopping too quickly: you don’t give your skin time to respond consistently.
  3. Using a serum and then skipping hydration: comfort and barrier support remain the basics.
  4. Forgetting SPF, which works against your own routine.

Persistent irritation?

In case of persistent irritation, burning, flaking or worsening: pause actives, go back to cleanser and cream, and seek medical advice for stubborn complaints.
