How to use a safety razor: shave without irritation
Using a safety razor seems trickier than it is. Wet your skin and lather up well, hold the razor at an angle of about 30 degrees and shave with short strokes in the direction of hair growth, without pressure. Rinse with cold water and look after your skin afterwards with a gentle cream.
What is a safety razor?
A safety razor is a reusable metal razor with a single replaceable, double-edged blade. You only replace the blade, not the whole razor. That means less waste, a smooth shave and, in the long run, a better price than disposable razors.

Preparation: how to start off right
Ideally, shave after a warm shower: your pores are open and your skin is softer. Wet the skin well and apply a shaving soap or shaving foam for enough glide. Without that step, the razor glides less smoothly and you run a higher risk of irritation.
Our shaving bar is made for exactly this: with green tea, aloe vera and jojoba oil for a soft, creamy lather that protects your skin from the blade.

Shaving with a safety razor step by step
- Set the angle. Hold the safety razor against your skin at an angle of about 30 degrees.
- Stretch the skin. Pull the skin taut with your free hand, so the hairs stand upright.
- Shave with the grain. Shave with short, calm strokes in the direction of hair growth. Never against the grain, as that increases the risk of irritation.
- No pressure. Let the weight of the razor do the work, instead of pushing.
- Rinse in between. Rinse the blade clean regularly while shaving.
- Rinse off. Rinse your skin afterwards with cold water.

The right angle and pressure
This is the part that really matters: an angle of about 30 degrees and no pressure. That's exactly what makes the difference between a smooth shave and irritation or nicks. Beginners most often go wrong here by forcing the razor too much.
Aftercare after shaving
Rinse your skin with cold water afterwards: it helps close your pores. Then pat your skin dry instead of rubbing, which is gentler on your skin. Next, apply a mild, nourishing aftershave or body butter.

Replacing blades and maintenance
Rinse your safety razor well after use and let it dry before you put it away, to prevent rust. Replace the blade after about 5 to 10 shaves. Spare blades are cheap and plastic-free, so maintenance costs you little effort or money.
