Tips for a zero-waste bathroom

Tips voor een afvalarme badkamer
For many of us, the bathroom is a special place. It is a place where me-time often takes center stage. From personal basic hygiene to extensive skin care to shower or bath thoughts. We spend a lot of time in the bathroom and often create a lot of waste. Have you ever stopped to think about that small bathroom waste bin that is already full again? That is why it is high time for tips for a low-waste bathroom!

Take a look around your bathrooms. Look in the cupboards, next to the toilet, in the shower, on the edge of the bath, in the drawers, … You will probably see more (disposable) plastic than you think. Let us list some of the culprits.

Shower gel and shampoo in plastic bottles : People wash themselves often, very often. And shower gel and shampoo in plastic bottles are still the common way that the largest group of people buy these products. In 2016, an estimated 480 billion bottles were sold worldwide. That works out to a little less than a million bottles every minute.

Make-up wipes : Face and make-up wipes are often an essential part of many bathroom routines. If you use one or two cotton pads to remove your make-up every day, you throw an average of 300 to 600 cotton pads in the bin every year. These are also often difficult to recycle because they are made up of different fibres.

Disposable Razors : Razors have become a fixture in many bathrooms. And unfortunately, the vast majority of those razors are made of plastic. The typical refillable razors come with tons of plastic packaging and eventually need to be thrown away. The EPA estimates that about 2 billion razors are thrown away each year (in the US alone!).

Disposable Menstrual Products : Menstrual products are a necessity, but the most common menstrual products create a lot of waste. Most products are single-use and are made of plastic or other non-recyclable materials. It is estimated that 5,000 to 15,000 tampons and pads are used in a person’s lifetime, and that can really add up!

Although a bathroom can produce a lot of waste, it doesn't have to! With these changes, you can eliminate waste from your bathroom and even save space and money. With these 'swaps', you and your bathroom will go through life with less waste.

Shampoo bars or refillable bottles : Where a classic bar of soap has been around since grandma's time, the shampoo or body bar is a new phenomenon. Anyone who is concerned with reducing plastic cannot ignore it. It is often packaged in cardboard and depending on the size, it could also save up to 3 bottles!

Washable Makeup Wipes : Cotton or bamboo makeup wipes are the perfect replacement. They are washable, easy to store, and can be reused over and over again. You can combine them with your favorite cleanser or makeup remover for a fresh face without plastic waste!

Reusable Razor : A good long-term investment is a reusable razor. There are many options and they are available almost everywhere. A Saferty Razor, for example, not only looks great in your bathroom, but also saves a lot of waste. All you have to do is replace the individual blades and keep the handle forever!

Reusable menstrual products : The range of sustainable menstrual products has expanded enormously in recent years. From a menstrual cup to menstrual underwear and reusable sanitary towels. So you will definitely find a product that suits your needs. They certainly have one thing in common; they are not made for single use. Furthermore, these variants are often much cheaper than their less sustainable counterparts. Definitely worth it!
