Why is a breast self-exam important?

If you know your breasts well, you notice sooner when something changes: a lump, a thickening or a difference in the skin. And the earlier you spot a change, the greater the chance of successful treatment.

That's why WONDR is teaming up with Think Pink again, to encourage every woman to do a monthly check. Notice anything unusual? Then see your GP.

HOW DO YOU DO THE boobie CHECK?

Look in the mirror
Step 1

Look in the mirror

  • Look at your breasts carefully.
  • Watch for changes in size, shape, skin or nipple.
  • Put your hands behind your head and look again.
Divide your breast
Step 2

Divide your breast

  • Imagine your breast as a circle divided into 12 slices, like a pie.
  • Place your hand about 5 cm below your collarbone.
  • Put your other hand behind your neck.
Feel with your fingertips
Step 3

Feel with your fingertips

  • Use 3 to 4 fingertips and make circular movements.
  • Apply light pressure and move from the outer edge of the breast towards the nipple. Repeat for each section.
  • Also check your armpit and the area between your armpit and breast.
Check the nipple
Step 4

Check the nipple

  • Gently pull the nipple slightly away from the body.
  • See whether it moves freely. Repeat on the other breast.

FAQ

How often and when should I do a breast self-exam?

Once a month, preferably a few days after your period. That's when your breasts are least tender and you can best feel any changes.

Is it normal for my breasts to feel lumpy?

Yes. This is due to the glandular tissue in your breasts. Your menstrual cycle can also affect how your breasts feel. Not every change is a cause for concern, which is why it's so important to know what is normal for you.

What should I look out for?

Look out for a lump or swelling in your breast or armpit, a change in size or shape, dimpling, redness or thickening of the skin, an inverted or changed nipple, discharge from the nipple and persistent pain that doesn't go away after your period.

When should I see my doctor?

As soon as you notice something new or different, or if you're worried. Contact your GP or gynaecologist. These signs don't always point to cancer, but always have them checked by a professional.

Does a self-exam replace a medical check-up?

No. A self-exam is a supplement to regular medical check-ups, not an alternative. It does help you notice changes early, and early detection improves the chance of recovery.

Why does WONDR work with Think Pink?

Think Pink is the national breast cancer organisation in Belgium and works every day to make women aware of the importance of self-examination. With the Boobie Bars, WONDR joins forces with Think Pink to bring that message right into your bathroom: a tangible reminder to take a moment every month to check in with your body. And you immediately support a good cause: for every box sold, €5 goes to Think Pink.
